That is exactly how i would describe sacrifice. And is still my practice in life. I thought about the law of karma, "you reap what you saw", are we going against the law by helping those who are paying their price? I dont know and dont believe so. I consider those i meet as people given a chance to re-realise. Those who are destined to receive my helping hand. Strangely, or may be not strangely, i dont seem to find "the hand".
Great question. I think it is when we put others before ourself. That is forget about ourSelf in order to help others with their suffering.
